I shot a picture earlier today in downtown Toronto showing several maintenance men working on a nearby apartment roof. They were adding 4 more 5G transmitters to the already loaded mast. Lately tens of thousands of masts like this are popping up here in Canada and all over the world.

On a recent visit to Antigua & Barbuda I noticed several of these masts throughout the Island which has a population of 96,000 and is 440 Sq km’s… Antigua & Barbuda are the first of several other Caribbean Islands which are having 5G masts installed.  So far over 1,700 cities worldwide already have it.  For those who don’t know what 5G means it’s the 5th generation mobile network. It’s a new global wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.

5G enables a new kind of network that’s designed to connect virtually everyone and everything together including machines, objects, and devices. 5G wireless technology is meant to deliver higher multi-Gigs per sec peak data speeds, more reliability, massive network capacity, increased availability, and a more uniform user experience to more users. Higher performance and improved efficiency to empower new user experiences and connects new industries. We’re entering a truly new era of connectivity — unfeasible with 4G alone.

One of the most exciting opportunities presented by 5G is that it’s designed to significantly reduce latency (The delay between sending and receiving information) whether you’re streaming a live VR soccer game, video chatting with a friend, or playing a virtual reality game, it’s almost as if you are there. If you have a 4G phone you won’t get 5G as it’ll need a distinct configuration. With the speed at which we’re going 6G could be just round the corner..

and who knows where we’ll end up then?
