Here it is January 2024 where most places in the world are shivering in rain, the cold and snow. In the Caribbean island of Antigua & Barbuda it’s 365 beaches are sunny and hot with the island getting ready for its annual migration of wealthy people from around the world not only to visit the island by plane or one of the huge cruise ships that arrive daily through St John’s the capitol but also to English Harbour the Unesco World Heritage Site that houses since the 17th Century the famous Nelson’s Dockyard the old stomping grounds of Horatio Nelson.
Over the years it has become the sailing capitol of the Caribbean with not only small but large multi-million dollar yachts arriving from all over the globe. This has created the building of many first class hotels, restaurants and vacation properties that can be rented or bought. Recently prime minister Gaston Browne reported in the media that there were over 28 private jets parked at the Antiguan V.C Bird Airport and with the arrival of Jeff Bezos’s multi million dollar yacht there must be a reason for all this, Other attractions in the area include Shirley Heights, the historic military compound which was built in the 1780’s to protect the navel dockyard, and now home to its famous Sunday BBQ social gathering and BBQ which attracts hundreds of people.
Another local attraction is the surreal geological formations of the Pillars of Hercules which are two limestone cliffs at the entrance to Little Bay Beach which have been carved naturally into the cliff face by relentless wind, rain and crashing waves that have created a series of curvaceous pillars overlooking the Caribbean Sea. This is just a small description of locations available on this Paradise Island.
