Desiree Smith: Working in a mans world?

In a world that is historically dominated by men, Desiree Smith chooses a career in a predominately-male driven industry construction. Who is this woman who sees herself equal to men and what does it say about her?

Desiree is originally from the Johnsons Point / Crab Hill area in Antigua. Desiree is a veteran Construction worker in the GTA with a specialty in Flooring. She is a former executive member of the Antigua and Barbuda Association of Toronto  and has spearheaded a number of Cultural and Educational events for our community.  Desiree possesses good leadership skills. This is demonstrated by the influence and impact that she brings to the Ontario Construction Industry, as a Tradeswoman.

This is a woman who sees no boundaries or limitations set before her. She is not intimidated by gender roles or expectations but instead decides what she wants and goes after it.

She got into the trades after attending a job fair and speaking with a rep from Local 27. Through the SCAS program she was able to join local 27 and begin her apprenticeship.

Desiree T. Smith is a founding committee member of the Ontario Building & Construction Tradeswomen and a delegate member of the Carpenters Union Local 27 Member of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

She is also a Member of Coalition of Black Trade Unionist (CBTU), Volunteer Carpenter for the New Dawn Moravian Church Affiliated and she works to encourage more Black women to consider trade careers. More over Desiree Smith is a trailblazer for women but more over for women of color and a shining example for the youth.
